JagunJagun: Exploring the fashion of our ancestors

Despite all the action, we were more fascinated by makeup and wardrobe. It was a re-enactment of Yoruba fashion of yore. From the kingly robes to the adire ensemble by the maidens in the story.

That the epic movie “JagunJagun” was well received is no longer news. If you call the production “total package”, you’ll be correct.

Despite all the action, we were more fascinated by makeup and wardrobe. It was a re-enactment of Yoruba fashion of yore. From the kingly robes to the adire ensemble by the maidens in the story.

After sitting through the over 120 minutes of action, I had to go in search of that creative designer who handled the wardrobe.

I reached the ever busy Temilola Awe, the creative designer behind the costumes in JagunJagun, friendly and focused; she has made a good name for herself in the Nigeria movie industry creating costumes to fit different narratives.

Temilola Awe

We got Temilola Awe chatting, see the chat below;

Que: Who is Temilola to start with?

Answer: My name is Temilola Awe known as Lola Awe

Que: we are familiar with Lola Awe the designer and I saw your name on the bit in JagunJagun, I wondered what the connection was
Answer: Because I’m the costumier there is a huge connection; the story is never complete without a befitting costume to compliment the characters.

Que: prior to JagunJagun, have you worked on a similar project; can you name them?
Answer: Yes… Battle on Buka street, Diamond in the sky, Survival of jelijeli, Seven and half date, Osas omoge Benin, Unforgivable, Iya alalake, Asiri Ade and Kesari coming soon..and so on.

Que: were you solely responsible for design and sewing or which part did you really center on?
Answer: It depends on the project..but majorly I do all
Que: please share the creative process and were you enthralled by the designs?

Asnwer: on the designs it was not so easy but I was able to make it happen due to experience and the zeal of making great and challenging designs.
At least each design takes nothing less than a week or more to draft.

Que: what were the challenges you faced in the course of the project?

Answer: no new challenges because it is something I have been doing for years but we do have some frustrating moments.

Que: are you working on any movie at the moment?

Answer: Yes

Que: How juicy was the JagunJagun project?

Answer: All forms of juicy, from the planning to the shoot and to the day of premiere you can feel the greatness even till today …

Que: what is your advice for folks willing to join your line of business?

Answer: they should be determined and always know that it is not a job for feeble minded people, you have to always be on your feet and most times you think ahead of the game and always try to be ahead of your past results. believe in yourself, there is no limit to what you can achieve and don’t hate your fellow man.. thank you
