Zimbabwean Designer Receives Standing Ovation at Mzuzu Fashion Week 2018

Mzuzu Fashion Week 2018 which took place at the beginning of October left the town filled with excitement and anticipation for next year’s event.

Headlining this year’s event was Harare based Zimbabwean brand Nandi
Larethi.
Nandi Larethi is an award winning progressive fashion house, looking to change and enlighten the way people think about dressing and looking glamorous. The fashion house is inspired by fantasias looks for functions, day to
day life and adding that little extra edge to your wardrobe. Abiot Malawa the Creative Director started designing in Grade 6 he then proceeded to do a Diploma in Clothing Technology in 1999.
This was Nandi Larethi’s second showcase at Mzuzu Fashion Week. His experience from the previous year attracted him to come and showcase again. His theme for this year’s collection was bridal due to the increase in
consumers across the continent wanting bespoke locally crafted wedding couture. The collection left the audience dazzled and received a standing ovation.
Preceding the showcase Nandi Larethi was given the opportunity to work exclusively with the Mzuzu Fashion Week models on a shoot for his male underwear line which will be launching in 2019. This cross border collaboration encourages growth and unity across the region.
“Mzuzu is growing and you can see the growth through Mzuzu Fashion Week. Consumers are beginning to understand the essence of
fashion design within the region. It’s exciting for any designer to get orders from the runway and I look forward to working with more
buyers in Malawi in future.” Abiot Malawa – Creative Director.
Over the main 2 evenings of runway shows designers showcased their new collections. There were also performances from local artists and dancers. In total over the 2 days of runway shows 111 and looks were displayed on the runway. Unlike any other year designers received buyers and orders straight from the runway, which is an encouraging sign that consumers in Malawi are now beginning to understand the value of events such as Mzuzu Fashion Week.
Final Note from the Mzuzu Fashion Week Team:
